Of the characters, Anna was the most relatable. He was almost too perfect, but he supported Anna and I have to support him for that.

He was good at his job, a good husband, son, and brother. He didn’t really have flaws, though, which is the only reason I hesitate to call him my favorite. Anna was admirable, but Jack was a great support character. Between them, I think I preferred Jack because he made Anna happy. Jack and Anna were both very likable characters. It was overall a dull journey, all things considered, and there was too much plot thrown in and not enough character development. People who started in a good standing finished there as well. No drastic changes in thought or action took place. My issue became when none of them were dynamic and stayed the same throughout the long novel. But very little felt closed in my opinion and there was too much filler in the middle.Īt first, the characters seemed real and very three-dimensional. Some characters (literally) left and were ignored for the rest of the story, others were so perfect it became annoying, and some had arcs that were never finished. But as the book progressed, I was disenchanted.

I was vested in what happened to all of them. Donati built complicated characters and gave them rich backstories. When this book started out, I was amazed. Faced with their helplessness, Anna must make an unexpected choice between holding on to the pain of her past and letting love into her life.įor Sophie, an obstetrician and the orphaned daughter of free people of color, helping a desperate young mother forces her to grapple with the oath she took as a doctor-and thrusts her and Anna into the orbit of Anthony Comstock, a dangerous man who considers himself the enemy of everything indecent and of anyone who dares to defy him.
